The book follows an essay of the same name which was published in The New Yorker last year
Japanese Breakfast‘s Michelle Zauner has signed a book deal to publish a memoir titled Crying In H Mart.
According to a press release, “Crying in H Mart is Zauner’s story about growing up Korean-American, losing her mother too young, searching for identity in a hybrid culture, and finding a passion for her ancestry and Korean cooking as a way to heal and return to her roots in the wake of loss.”
The musician penned an essay of the same name in The New Yorker about her experiences in the American-Asian supermarket chain H Mart, relating them to the loss of her mother who died of cancer.
Zauner was formerly a member of the indie rock band Little Big League, and released music under the moniker Little Girl, Big Spoon before her first album as Japanese Breakfast, 2016’s acclaimed ‘Psychopomp’, was released.
Earlier this year, Zauner directed a surreal video for Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst’s project Better Oblivion Community Center, taking the helm on the visual for ‘Dylan Thomas’.
“Phoebe Bridgers and Conor Oberst are two of my favourite songwriters and lyricists of our time, so it was an honour to get to work with them on the visuals for their new project together,” said Zauner.
“As always I worked with Adam Kolodny, my DP and creative collaborator to bring this cross between an Eyes Wide Shut LA mansion party and the Great Northern Hotel to life.”
