Watch Pearl Jam cover The White Stripes and The Beatles during their first Seattle show in five years

Pearl Jam have kicked off the first in a string of stadium shows in Seattle by entertaining a home town crowd with an epic 33 song set that saw them mixing their own material with some iconic covers.

As they performed at Seattle’s Safeco Field on Wednesday night, the grunge icon surprised fans by delivering a cover of The Beatles’ ‘Help’ that eventually merged into their own ‘Help Help’.

But one of the show’s true highlights came late on, when the first encore was marked by a cover of The White Stripes ‘We’re Going To Be Friends’.

Footage posted on social media shows frontman Eddie Vedder performing the song, flanked on his stage by his two daughters and two women who were believed to be their teachers.

The White Stripes cover comes only a month after Pearl Jam performed with Jack White in Portugal.

Describing their NOS Alive set, NME wrote: “Towards the end of the set, things take a turn into the ridiculous; a cover of ‘Comfortably Numb’ (their second Pink Floyd cover of the night) is shortly followed by a site-wide singalong to John Lennon’s unifying ‘Imagine’ – delivered in Vedder’s rough growl. And then, they only bloody go and bring on Jack White for a cover of ‘Rockin’ in the Free World’. With nigh on 50,000 people gathered around, it’s like a storytime of gigantic proportions.”
