Backstreet Boys show cancelled after storm hits venue injuring at least 14 fans

The boyband were due to perform in Oklahoma before 80mph winds caused damage to stage structures

Backstreet Boys were forced to cancel a show last night (August 18) after at a metal structure collapsed and injured at least 14 of their fans.

The group were due to take to the stage at WinStar World Casino and Resort in Oklahoma. Ahead of the concert, a storm hit the outdoor venue – with fans being injured by falling structures.

According to a statement from the venue, staff began to evacuating fans when winds of 70-80mph knocked over entrance trusses. However, they add that around 150 patrons standing in line “did not heed staff’s warnings”.

The statement confirms that 14 people were treated at the scene and then transported to local hospitals.

A reporter said that her friend on the scene estimated around 10 ambulances, and witnessed paramedics taking those injured out on stretchers.

Speaking of the cancellation, Backstreet Boys tweeted: “We never want to put our fans in harm’s way and with tonight’s weather and the injuries from earlier, we have decided to cancel the show and will attempt to reschedule.

“The most important thing is for everyone to get home safely and we will see you all very soon!”

Band member Howie Dorough added: “So sad as I was really excited for us to rock Oklahoma tonight … Hope everyone’s ok and safe.”

The sold-out show is being rescheduled.
